Jessica Masterson, RDN, CDN, CDCES

My passion is to help clients by providing them with the education and knowledge to optimize their health. I take pride in my ability to be empathetic and listen; paying special attention to motivational level and readiness to change. I graduated from the State University of New York College at Buffalo in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science from the Coordinated Program in Dietetics.  During my time at Buffalo State I gained 1100+ clinical experience hours integrating classroom knowledge into practice developing and monitoring nutrition care plans for patients with a variety of conditions. I spent time at Buffalo General Hospital, Erie Community Medical Center and Women and Children’s Hospital with community experiences at Women Infants and Children, Erie County Office of the Ageing, Meals on Wheels, and AIDS Community Services.

In 2008 I completed a four-week senior practicum internship at Green Mountain at Fox Run in Ludlow, Vermont. Green Mountain is a health resort retreat, focused on helping women implement lifestyle changes to facilitate weight loss.

Prior to Buffalo State I obtained an associate degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University. My background in culinary arts and education in nutrition sciences allows me to bring the practicalities and sciences of healthy eating together in a way that most benefits clients and patients.

In August of 2008 I passed the dietetics registration exam and became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).  In 2013 after obtaining 1000+ hours of professional practice in diabetes education I sat for and passed the examination to become a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES).

I began my career at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center where I worked as an inpatient and outpatient dietitian. I provided care to patients in the ICU, the surgical unit, telemetry unit and on the adult mental health unit.  In addition to spending time on all the nursing units I also worked in the Diabetes & Endocrinology Center and the Metabolic & Bariatric Services program. In the Diabetes & Endocrinology Center I proved individual and group diabetes and nutrition education. I coordinated a monthly Living with Diabetes Class and promoted health in the community. As a member of the Metabolic & Bariatric Services program I provided weight loss education and pre- and post-operative nutrition education.

All these roles gave me the opportunity to effectively work in partnership with a variety of health care team members, patients, and patient families to provide the most effective care for the patient.

During this time, I worked as a cooking/nutrition instructor at Top’s Cooking School. I developed menus and recipes for bimonthly based cooking classes. I instructed participants on healthy cooking techniques, tips on healthy eating and the nutritional benefits of the ingredients utilized.

I was also able to provide culinary education as an adjunct professor at Buffalo State College Food and Nutrition department. I instructed the lab section for the Food Preparation class and Applied Food Chemistry for nutrition majors.

After relocating to Connecticut, I began work as a clinical specialist on the sales team at Roche Diabetes Care the makers of Accu-Chek products. I had the opportunity to work closely with health care providers and patients to optimize their health and diabetes control. I provided insulin pump, glucometer, and bolus advice training in addition to nutrition and diabetes education.

For a short time before taking an extended maternity leave, I was able to gain experience in the integrative and functional nutrition field here at Buffalo Nutrition and Dietetics. During my time with the practice I shared my diabetes education background, my culinary expertise and nutrition knowledge while providing medical nutrition therapy with an integrative approach.

Most recently I have been working at a federally qualified heath care center (FQHC) providing nutrition education to an underserved population. The clients I work with often have multiple barriers to achieving optimal health including addictions, addiction recovery, poverty, low education, and limited access to services. I work with many individuals to help them heal with food, improving their health despite the many obstacles they face. I provide care to individuals of all ages with a focus on our pediatric population and work closely with the pediatric team.  In addition to providing pediatric nutrition education one on one with families working with selective eaters, teaching early childhood feeding and healthy lifestyle choices;  I host a kids hands on cooking class.

I am thrilled to be able to return to the practice and am excited to see how the practice as grown to be one of the premier nutrition practices in Western New York  providing top of the line medical nutrition therapy with an integrative and functional nutrition approach. I will be completing my certificate in training in integrative and functional nutrition and will continue to further my knowledge in all nutrition related areas to help benefit our clients.

As a Certified Diabetes Educator, Registered Dietitian, and type 1 diabetic I have a passion for helping people optimize their health with a special interest in helping individuals with all types of diabetes, prediabetes, and related conditions. I am focused on providing clients with the tools and resources to gain and maintain control of health through education, device use, medication, and nutrition. I can effectively collaborate with clients, healthcare providers and industry professionals to best meet the needs of the patient and the goals of the health care provider.

Nutrition and our relationship with food is the cornerstone of a healthy and happy lifestyle. My desire is to help people understand the importance of nutrition and the impact it has on their lives.
