Carly Hansen, RDN, CDN, IBCLC

My career as a Registered Dietitian started in 2018 after successfully completing all eligibility requirements and passing the registration exam. I graduated from the State University College at Buffalo as a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron National Honor Society and with a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition, a Minor in Spanish, and a two year internship consisting of 1200 supervised practice hours in various health care settings throughout Erie and Niagara County. In 2020, I became a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) and in 2021 an International Board Certified Lactation Counselor. I’m excited to have also expanded my expertise with a certification in Integrative and Functional Nutrition and practice at Buffalo Nutrition & Dietetics, PLLC.

I started working in the Nutrition field in 2013 as a Nutrition Services Aide at Our Lady of Peace (OLP) Short and Long Term Care Skilled Nursing facility in Lewiston. In 2017, while completing my Senior year at Buffalo State and the second year of my internship, I was promoted to Nutrition Services Supervisor. In this position, I became fascinated with food safety and became ServSafe certified. My passion for Gerontological Nutrition also continued to grow and I completed my Senior Practicum and specialty rotation at Schoellkopf Health Center (SHC) in Niagara Falls. In 2019, I began working as the per diem Dietitian at SHC and transitioned to full time in 2021. I worked very closely with all members of the Interdisciplinary Team to develop and monitor individualized nutritional care plans for all resident’s and improve quality of life. The more time I spent working with geriatric and subacute rehab patients, the more I discovered my true passion to promote and provide nutrition education and to prevent and/or prolong individuals from transitioning into a long term care facility.

In addition to working at SHC, I also worked as a Dietitian for Catholic Charities Women Infant Children (WIC) program in Niagara County from 2019-2021. It was at WIC where I developed a strong interest in pregnancy, postpartum, lactation, infant and child nutrition. I provided participant centered nutrition counseling for nutrition risk clients and families. I created and prescribed personalized and tailored food packages based on the participant’s nutritional needs in accordance with NYS regulations. Additionally, I developed care plans and monitored participant’s progress in collaboration with other health care providers and social services. The more clients and families I counseled, the more I desired to provide and share evidence-based nutrition education as well as food safety education. I truly believe that optimal nutrition is established during pregnancy and continues across the lifespan. Nutrition during pregnancy is more than just a prenatal vitamin and I’m a firm believer in “food first, supplement second” in all aspects of life and not just limited to pregnancy. As a CLC, I promote and advocate for breastfeeding individuals but I also understand a fed baby is best and have assisted dozens of families with choosing and supporting the best feeding for their unique situation.

I strive to always maintain professionalism in my practice and treat each and every patient with respect and dignity. I enjoy building rapport with each individual I work with and collaborate to achieve success with personalized nutritional goals. My experience working with diverse populations has allowed me to excel in applying reflective listening, critical thinking, and professional judgement to promote and manage nutrition at every age and stage in life. Each patient has a different story to tell and deserves one on one patient centered care. With a strong interest in Integrative and Functional Nutrition, I’m determined to combine medical nutrition therapy with a holistic and personalized approach to help encourage and attain overall health and healing.
